About the Workshop:
Join Sean Rowen for an immersive fungal experience. We move beyond basic identification to learn about the flavors of the forest floor, along with the sustainable harvesting ethics that allow us to enter into relation with wild mushrooms.
These forays are a lot like bird watching, but for mushrooms. We will walk through the woods taking in the full fungal diversity of the ecosystem, observing, identifying, and discussing all the fascinating species we encounter along the trail. From there, we will target specific prime edible species—with a strong focus on the abundance of golden chanterelles fruiting this time of year—and carefully study their toxic lookalikes.
We will finish the foray by gathering in the field to cook up and eat fresh mushrooms together in our outdoor kitchen setup. Rain or shine, we will be prepared with a popup canopy if it gets wet. All people are welcome to join!
Date: Sunday, October 11th (more fall dates to be added soon)
Location & Logistics: The exact meeting spot for caravanning will be emailed to ticket holders prior to the foray (typically within a 1-hour drive of Portland in the Tillamook State Forest). We often caravan and carpool from the initial meeting spot—if you need a ride or have extra space in your vehicle for a fellow forager, just let us know after booking and we will help connect you.
What to Bring: Please bring your own camp chair for the field cooking session, sturdy water-resistant hiking boots, rain gear, a basket or mesh/paper bag, a pocket knife, and plenty of water/snacks.
