Finding the Flowers
Magnolias, while not native to the Pacific Northwest, are a common sight in our gardens and landscapes. Their popularity stems from their stunning spring blooms and relatively easy care. This widespread cultivation means that many of us have access to these edible flowers right in our own backyards. Before harvesting, it's always a good idea to ensure the trees haven't been treated with any pesticides or chemicals.
Choosing Your Magnolia Blossoms
Not all magnolia varieties are created equal when it comes to syrup making. Magnolia x soulangeana and Magnolia grandiflora are often cited as good options, though other varieties may also be suitable. It's important to:
- Identify your magnolia tree correctly.

- Use the leaf shaped petals for the syrup. Try not to bruise the petal as you pluck it, Or it will cause the leaf to oxidize and turn brown.
- The base of the flower contains bitter parts that should be removed.
