Winter Mushroom Adventure - A Foray for Chanterelles, Hedgehogs & More!
While our fall mushroom trips have wrapped up for the year, Rowen Forage is excited to announce a special Winter Wonders Foray focused on winter mushrooms!
What to Expect:
- Expert Guidance: Learn to identify winter chanterelles, hedgehogs, and other cold-weather mushrooms with the help of an expert.
- Hands-on Experience: Actively search for fascinating fungi and learn about their unique characteristics.
- Discover Secret Knowledge: Explore the largest temperate rainforest on the planet in Oregon’s Coast Range, and uncover the magic of fungal biodiversity.
- Sustainable Practices: Gain valuable knowledge on responsible foraging techniques that protect the delicate forest ecosystem.
The Delicious Finale:
We'll cap off our adventure by enjoying a delicious wild mushroom feast prepared at a nearby campsite. Learn to transform your finds from forest floor to flavorful dishes in our outdoor kitchen. We cater to all dietary needs.
Trip Details:
- Dates: One special Winter Wonders Foray will be held in January and one in February (exact date to be announced soon). Stay tuned for updates!
- Location: Meet at a designated spot within a 1-hour drive of Portland. We'll then caravan to a trailhead for our foray.
- Duration: Allow approximately 6 hours for your entire adventure.
- Cost: $100 per person. This fee secures your spot and is payable online upon receiving an invoice. Cancellations made until 7 days before the trip are eligible for a full refund.

Fall Mushroom Foray
In autumn, the Pacific Northwest forests filled with an eruption of fungal life.
Join Rowen Forage Club on an unforgettable adventure into the mossy world of autumn mushrooms. Our guided forays offer the perfect opportunity to:
Learn the amazing features and variety of Oregon's wild mushrooms
- A hands-on learning experience of the fungal biodiversity that grows in the Tillamook rainforest.
Discover wild edible mushrooms - Chanterelles and more
- Forage for chanterelles and other gourmet fungi. Learn where and how they grow, how to identify them, and gain knowledge that will last a lifetime. With expert guidance, you'll learn sustainable foraging practices that respect the delicate forest ecosystem.
Prepare, Cook & Feast
- At a nearby campsite, you will enjoy a meal made from the mushrooms we found on our expedition. You will learn how to transform your mushrooms from the forest floor to a delicious meal in our outdoor kitchen. Then hang out by a campfire while we enjoy a delightful feast - all diets are provided for.

On the day of the foray, we will meet at a designated spot within a 1 hour drive of Portland. From there, we will caravan to a nearby trailhead, where we will walk together to the mushroom patch. Allow for 6 hours for your trip - the entire foray takes about 4 hours, from the time we meet until it is time to drive home.

To participate, or for more information, send an email to: rowenforest@gmail.com. Let me know what date you would like to attend, and how many people are in your group. I will send an invoice you can pay online - the cost is $100 per person. The payment will reserve your spot. Cancellations can be made at no charge until 5 days before the foray.

Spring Forage Club Experience:
- Location: We'll meet at a designated spot within an hour of Portland. Carpooling and caravanning options will be available to reach nearby mushroom patch.
- Learning & Identification: Our expert will guide you through identifying a fascinating array of edible spring shrooms - inspiring confidence in recognizing them in their natural habitat.
- Harvesting & Preparation: After honing your identification skills, you'll get hands-on experience finding delicious edible spring treasures, potentially including various wild plant species.
- Wild Kitchen Cookout: We'll then head to a nearby campsite, where you'll learn proper cleaning and preparation techniques. Finally, enjoy a delightful feast, savoring the fungal fruits of your labor, cooked fresh in our outdoor kitchen!
